206B – Rich Young Ruler

Matthew 19:16-26, Mark 10:17-27, Luke 18:18-27

Jesus was walking along the road when a young official ran up and knelt before him. He said, “Good teacher, what good thing can I do to make sure I get eternal life?”

Jesus answered him, “Why did you call me ‘good’? Only God is good.

But as to your question – obey the commandments and you will find life.”

“Which ones?”

“Don’t murder. Don’t commit adultery. Don’t steal. Don’t bear false witness, honor your parents.”

“Teacher, I have kept these since I was a child. What’s missing?”

Jesus looked at him and loved him. He said, “You’re lacking one thing. If you want treasure in heaven, sell everything you have and give it to the poor. Once you have done that, come and follow me.”

The young man was stunned when he heard this. He was very rich and wasn’t willing to give it up. With sadness, he walked away.

Jesus noticed how sad the young man was when he walked away. So the Lord turned to his disciples and said, “It’s hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God. It’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”

The disciples were shocked when they heard this. They said, “Then who can be saved?”

Jesus looked at them and said, “This is impossible with people but not with God. All things are possible with God.”
